Description: The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources has an opening for a technician to assist with fieldwork on the Integrated Deer Management Project. The Deer Project is a multiyear, statewide research effort seeking to combine information on deer populations, current deer habitat, and peopleÃf¢ÒÂEURÃ’Â(tm)s attitudes and expectations about deer populations for improved understanding and management of deer in Indiana. The successful applicant will work with Purdue faculty, staff, and graduate students to study the impacts of deer on habitat condition in Indiana.

Technician duties include, but are not limited to, identifying woody and herbaceous plant species, performing browse surveys, tallying sapling and seedling densities along transects, and planting/ measuring growth of oak seedlings. Shared housing will be provided. Applications will be evaluated as they are received.

Required Qualifications:

–       Progress towards or completion of BachelorÃf¢ÒÂEURÃ’Â(tm)s degree with coursework in Wildlife Biology, Forestry, or a related field

–       Knowledge and ability to use basic wildlife research tools and equipment including compass and hand-held GPS

–       Ability to accurately record scientific data

–       Ability to work effectively as part of a team

–       Ability to work in extreme and variable conditions (long days, inclement weather including extreme heat and rain, the presence of biting insects, and rugged terrain)

–       Ability to work a flexible schedule, with potential weekend work

–       Comfortable speaking to law enforcement, landowners and other stakeholders

–       Valid U.S. driverÃf¢ÒÂEURÃ’Â(tm)s license and the ability to drive University vehicles

Preferred Qualifications:

–       Experience with browse surveys

–       Prior experience in identification of woody and herbaceous plant species in the Midwestern U.S.

–       First Aid/CPR certification

The Plant Ecology lab at the Jones Center at Ichauway invites applications for a Seasonal Technician. Job duties include assisting with seed collection and processing, long-term data collection, data entry, and other field and laboratory work as needed. Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in biology, botany, horticulture, plant ecology, or a related field. Previous experience with seed collection or plant identification in the southeastern U.S. and the use of dichotomous keys is highly desired. Position: The Fisheries Science and Emerging Technologies Program at the New England AquariumÃf¢ÒÂEURÃ’Â(tm)s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to assist with field work primarily related to sharks, and to provide data collection and analysis support for several ongoing projects. Position will be primarily based in southeastern Massachusetts with work taking place in and around Cape Cod, Boston, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. The position includes funding for 5 months, from approximately mid-May through mid-October, with the potential for extension contingent on funding and performance. Must be available to begin by June 1.

Duties: The successful candidate will assist with research and data collection for several field-based projects including the investigation of spatial ecology and behavior of coastal and pelagic sharks and the post-release monitoring of sharks and sea turtles following interaction with fishing gear. At-sea sampling will include rod and reel, gillnet, and longline fishing, tagging target species, and deploying, downloading, and maintaining acoustic monitoring equipment.

PAID FIELD ASSISTANT FOR INSECT HOST-PARASITOID & GLOBAL CHANGE PROJECT IN WESTERN OAK ECOSYSTEMS led by Dr. Kirsten Prior at Binghamton University SUNY (priorecologylab.com). We are looking for a field assistant to work collaboratively as a part of a team examining insect-host parasitoid interactions in oak gall-wasp communities in western oak savanna ecosystems. This project examines the community dynamics of range expansions, asking how interactions are altered under range expansions, and how altered interactions influence the dynamics of range-expanding species. The field assistant will be responsible for assisting with conducting experiments and sampling oak galls on Garry (Oregon white) oak trees (Quercus garryana) in northern Oregon, Washington State, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Duties will involve daily travel to and from field sites (from 20 mins. To 1.5 hours away), collecting oak gall-wasps from trees, sorting and rearing galls and gall emergents, collecting other spatial and environmental data at sites, setting up enclosure experiments at sites, and data entry and processing. Given the nature of conducting time-sensitive surveys in the field, and the logistics of traveling to several regions, the work schedule needs to be flexible, and work hours will depend on when tasks need to be completed and on weather conditions. Thus, the candidate should be able to work somewhat flexible hours (i.e., maybe on a Saturday). The candidate needs to like to spend time outdoors, be comfortable hiking long distances on hilly terrain, be able to travel considerable distances in a vehicle, be willing to camp for several nights at a time, be able to work well in a team and to maintain a positive disposition under field conditions. The candidate should also have an ability to focus, be motivated to complete sometimes tedious tasks (e.g., working with small organisms), be motivated to learn to identify species in the field.

Compensation & Details: Salary is commensurate with experience. Housing will be paid (shared housing with ~1 graduate student) likely in northern Oregon. Ideally, the technician will travel to Binghamton, NY and help to drive the field vehicle (with one other person) to the west coast. Travel to and from Binghamton will be covered. The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking a Research Associate II to work, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Julie Blanchong), on a project whose objective is to develop genomic tools for white-tailed deer.

The individual in this position will a) communicate with state natural resource agencies to coordinate collection of hunter-harvested deer samples, b) conduct lab work including solution preparation, DNA extraction, DNA quantification, and agarose gel electrophoresis, and c) organize, maintain, and map records of deer samples using Excel or Access and GIS. The individual will work closely with the PI to select samples for a SNP array, analyze SNP data, and develop a plan for communicating results to state natural resource agencies.

This is a 12 month position. Salary will be determined based on experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.

Experience managing and organizing data in Excel or Access
