The Lacawac Sanctuary is filling 2 undergraduate internship positions in the summer of 2020

Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit biological field station and environmental education center located in NE Pennsylvania. Lacawac’s Research Internship Program offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education.

Lacawac interns participate in the Sanctuary’s missions of Research, Education, and Preservation. We are looking for enthusiastic interns who work well with others, have excellent attitudes, and a record of academic achievement. Interns must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Students working towards a degree in the natural sciences and/or an interest in ecology, conservation, or environmental education are encouraged to apply.

Interns should expect to work outside in all weather conditions and encounter wildlife common to Northeastern PA (mosquitoes, ticks, snakes, deer, black bears). Interns must be comfortable with being in small row boats and working on the water, hiking in temperate forests, and with physical labor. Lacawac is situated in a remote, rural area with no public transportation, so interns are strongly encouraged to bring their own vehicle. Applicants must be US citizens or have permission to work in the US and have a valid driver’s license. Interns receive a modest stipend and free housing at Lacawac. Housing includes shared living areas, bathroom, and kitchen and dorm-style bunk rooms for the duration of the internship. Both internships are from May 26th through August 14th, with negotiable start/stop dates.

POSITION #1: General Lacawac Intern

This position is an entry level position ideal for those looking to gain field experience. Interns spend considerable time participating in field work and laboratory analysis, educational and public programs for all ages, outreach activities, trail maintenance, and event preparation/clean-up.

POSITION #2: PLEON Lake Monitoring Program Internship

This position is appropriate for those with prior field or research experience, preferably in aquatic ecosystems. The Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network, or PLEON, is a lake monitoring program based at Lacawac Sanctuary. PLEON conducts routine monitoring of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of lakes, hosts public education workshops focused on promoting good lake stewardship, and runs a citizen science program on Pennsylvania’s 3rd largest lake, Lake Wallenpaupack.

PLEON seeks an undergraduate intern to assist with all aspects of the PLEON program. Interns will gain experience and training in:

The Wilds is hiring a part-time, year-round Wildlife Ecology Associate who will support the activities and conservation projects within the wildlife ecology department at The Wilds.  The Wilds is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) conservation center in southeastern Ohio that has nearly

10,000 acres of reclaimed mineland and remnant forest patches and presents multiple opportunities for field research and restoration of wildlife populations. The Wildlife Ecology department at The Wilds has four focal

priorities: Eastern Hellbender head-starting and conservation; American Burying Beetle reintroduction; Inventory and monitoring of native wildlife across The Wilds; and Conservation genetics and environmental DNA for wildlife populations. The associate will be responsible for assisting in all four of these focal programs and will also design and manage projects within at least one of the priority areas. Job Title: Barred Owl Field Technician

Description:

Two field technicians are needed to assist in a study on barred owl distribution and dispersal in the coastal redwood region of Mendocino County, California. Positions will run approximately April 13th – August 28th 2020.

A typical work week is 40 hours. Shared field housing will be provided, but camping may be required during the work week. Schedules will be irregular with a lot of evening/nighttime work. Technicians will conduct surveys for barred owls, track them via telemetry, and may assist in banding and GPS backpack-tagging of owls. A large portion (~50%) of the work will involve deploying and retrieving autonomous recording units (ARUs) across the study area via ATV. Technicians will also record, transcribe, and enter data into databases.

This study is part of an effort to collect more information on the status of barred owls in the coastal redwood region of California. The barred owl (Strix varia), a species native to the eastern U.S., has been progressively invading the west coast over the last several decades and poses a major threat to the persistence of the federally threatened northern spotted owl (S. occidentalis caurina). This work aims to inform the management of barred owls and spotted owls in this region. Technicians will work under a graduate student from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Applicants must:

-possess a B.S./B.A. in Wildlife Ecology, Biology, or related field -have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record -have experience operating 4WD vehicles on rugged, unmaintained roads -be physically fit and able to traverse steep and rugged terrain while carrying a heavy pack -be willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions -have excellent hearing and the ability to identify colors on bird bands as required -be able to navigate with GPS, topographic map, and compass -be comfortable working alone and hiking off-trail for extended periods, often at night -be able to adapt to a flexible schedule involving both day and night work and occasional weekend work -have experience conducting field surveys and using VHF radio-telemetry equipment -have excellent communication and organizational skills -be able to live and work cooperatively with others
