This is a great opportunity foranyone looking to obtain experience in fieldwork related to evolutionarybiology, speciation and plant ecology.The project: We study evolutionary dynamics and speciation insnapdragons. The study, which has been running since 2009, involvesfieldwork in natural hybrid zones between two subspecies with flowercolour differences. The goal is to understand how different evolutionaryforces—like natural selection—have shaped this diversity.The fieldwork: We are seeking volunteers to assist with the fieldwork,which involves working in teams to map locations of individual plants(GPS) (the plants are primarily found on the roadsides), tag and samplethem for leaves and flowers, measure traits, and process material forlater DNA extraction. There may also be opportunities to be involvedin other projects focusing on pollinator behaviour and plant-insectinteractions. The work is outdoors as well as indoors – about one-thirdof the of time will be spent indoors curating leaf samples and organizingand preparing sampling equipment. The work is highly team orientated,typically in groups of 2-3 in the field and larger groups processingsamples back at the research station. Since we aim to sample all livingindividuals in the hybrid zone during the flowering season, the dailyworkload can vary significantly. At peak season, we are often very busyand our daily routines change accordingly.The location: The field site is near Planoles in a beautiful part ofthe Pyrenees in North Eastern Spain (Catalonia). We stay in comfortableapartments overlooking a picturesque valley, with close access to hikingtrails and small villages.The ideal applicant: is an enthusiastic, hardworking biology student withstrong interest in working outdoors. You must be meticulous with recordingdata and also be comfortable working as part of a team. Experience withfield-based projects and plants is helpful but not essential. EDI 2022 Summer Fellowship Program

We have 15 fellowships available in our ecological data management training program for this summer. We are now requesting applications from undergraduate, graduate and recently graduated students. This fellowship is available to applicants who are U.S. citizens, legal residents or will possess a valid work or student visa for the entire duration of the fellowship. The Fellows will receive training in ecological data management and gain hands-on experience through participation in data preparation and publishing for specific host research projects. The fellowship support is $6000.

*Research Internships – Ecology and Evolutionary Biology*Research interns are needed to assist in a multi-disciplinary,multi-investigator, experimental study of the evolution of speciesinteractions in Trinidad, West Indies. The research is led by ProfessorsDavid Reznick (University of California, Riverside), Joseph Travis(Florida State University), Tim Coulson (University of Oxford), and RonBassar (Williams College).  We seek to integrate multiple biologicalfields for the study of these interactions in experimental populationsof guppies and killifish in Trinidad. Duties include assisting inmonthly censuses of guppy populations in montane streams. The monthlycensuses include long hours in the field and laboratory.  There willalso be 12 days off between each census when interns can pursue anindependent project.Interns will be required to spend a minimum of 3-months in Trinidad,with possibility of extension. There are potential start dates in March2022 and every month thereafter until September 2024. We will coverall travel and living expenses and provide housing.*Qualifications:* We seek interns who are entertaining the possibilityof pursuing graduate studies in some area of ecology and evolution andwho wish to gain some additional field research experience before doingso.  Research will take place in semi-remote areas of Trinidad sometimesunder bad weather conditions. John Valentine and Ken Heck.The positions will be full-time one (1) year internships and we are looking to fill this position quickly. The start date is flexible with the preferred start date being April 1, 2022 and interns must arrive by May 16, 2022.Interns will assist with exploring how connectivity between coastal habitat types influences biodiversity and secondary production. Interns will also assist with research that is conducted in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO) Network. Interns may also assist with experiments evaluating multistressor impacts on coastal ecology, and natural versus restored ecosystems’ performance under predicted future climatic conditions. Interns may also have the opportunity to develop individual research questions.Interns will receive training in fish and invertebrate sampling techniques and identification, and SAV and marsh identification and monitoring techniques. There may also be opportunities to learn other ecological field sampling techniques (oyster reef monitoring, fisheries sampling, and analytical methods) in a variety of marine environments.The work will be performed in a laboratory and outdoors. Laboratory work will involve long periods of sitting while entering data, sorting samples, and looking through a microscope, and outdoor work will sometimes involve long field days (>8 hours), possible exposure to adverse weather conditions (heat, rain, cold), and biting insects. The work requires physical exertion such as lifting or reaching to observe, collecting, or recording field data; or in some situations snorkeling and working off of a small.

REU intern opportunities at GMRI

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute is in its fourth year as an NSF-funded REU Site – Integrated Studies in a Rapidly Warming Fishery Ecosystem.  Students in this program have an opportunity to participate in field, lab, or computer-based research on the dynamics of the fish, plankton, and human communities in and around the Gulf of Maine. 

We welcome applications from undergraduate students from a broad range of institutions and backgrounds including students from two- and four-year colleges and underserved communities (e.g., minorities, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, veterans).

The program includes 10 weeks of hands-on research experience at our waterfront location in Portland Maine, a $600/week stipend, housing (at the Maine College of Art in downtown Portland: https://www.meca.edu/student-life/residence-life/residence-halls/), meal allowances and travel support for 6 students.
