CTSG Undergraduate research fellowship opportunity for summer 2021

The Connecticut Sea Grant Undergraduate Research Fellowship seeks to broaden participation of underrepresented/underserved students in marine and coastal professions by providing early career experience, training and mentorship to the next generation of scientists, decision makers and marine industry professionals.

The program will do so by funding a research fellowship for up to two undergraduate students who represent the social diversity of the communities of Connecticut. Underrepresented minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged students as well as students of color, indigenous students, US military veterans, members of the LGBTQ community, and students with disabilities are encouraged to seek a research mentor with whom to apply for this opportunity.

Up to two fellowships, each with a $5,000 stipend, will be offered this summer to enable selected students to conduct independent research under the guidance of a research mentor. The application process requires submission of a mentor-proposed natural or social science-based research project and a student nomination for the research fellowship. The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is accepting applications for the

Disease Ecology Project Assistant, âÂEURÂoeThe Tick ProjectâÂEUR (up to 10)

Research:  The Tick Project  is a randomized,

placebo-controlled, double-blind research program to design and test a

tick-control strategy for preventing human cases of tick-borne disease.

The study is conducted at the scale of entire residential neighborhoods

within the Lyme-disease endemic zone of the northeastern United States.

The study emphasizes principles of disease ecology in the context of

disease prevention.

Job Description: Project Assistants are needed to study the effects of tick

management interventions on the abundance and distribution of blacklegged

ticks and risk of tick-borne disease in people.  Location is the Cary

Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New YorkâÂEURÂ(tm)s Hudson River Valley, with

travel to sites throughout Dutchess County, New York.  Duties include

sampling, collecting, and identifying ticks from residential neighborhoods.

Qualifications: Meticulous attention to detail and experience in field

ecology is required. Prior experience with tick sampling is highly

desirable. The ability to work in small teams and to withstand hot and

humid field conditions is essential.

Employment to begin on April 12, 2021 and end July 16, 2021.

Position reports to Dr. Richard S. Ostfeld and is full time, 35 hours/week.

This is an hourly, non-exempt, non-benefited position. Wages are

commensurate with education and experience. The final candidate will be

required to complete a post-offer, pre-employment driving background check

The Institute for Natural Resources at Oregon State University is hiring field crews, crew leaders, and team leaders for sagebrush steppe sampling during the 2021 field season. Work begins late April and will continue to August or September. The job involves vegetation and soil sampling using AIM protocols throughout eastern Oregon, Washington, and northwest Nevada. Field work entails 8 day sampling hitches where we will be camping in the areas we will be working. Crews have 6 days off between hitches.  Crew members travel between their homes and the remote and widespread sample plots on the first and last days of the work hitch. Most crew members live in Portland / Corvallis / Eugene / Bend areas and but there is flexibility on where you can choose to live on the off hitches, provided it is logistically feasible. We are looking for people who are familiar with identifying plants, who can handle the hard work of digging soil pits and vegetation sampling in the often hash steppe environment, and are excited by extensive camping in remote, beautiful areas. The compensation will be between $13.73 and $19.51 per hour for crew members, $14.74 and $21.40 for crew leaders and $15.81 and $23.49 per hour for team leaders (depending on experience). We also provide a per deim of around $80 per day to cover expenses for food and wear and tear on your camping gear. We will be hiring 8 to 10 people under the Bio Tech 1 posting as crew members (who are part of a 2-person crew installing the plots), 5 to 8 people under the Bio Tech 2 posting as crew leaders (who manage the day to day activities of a 2-person crew), and 3 to 5 people under the Bio Tech 3 posting as team leaders (who manage the activities of 2 crews over each hitch). Description: The lab of Dr. Tim Greives is looking for a field technician to assist in the upcoming field season for a research project conducted in prairie pothole wetlands near Fargo, ND (Alice USFWS WPA). The research aims (1) to assess potential biomarkers of trade-offs in migration and reproduction, and (2) aggressive behavior in female red-winged blackbirds.

Duties include: capturing and banding free-ranging birds, morphological measurements, blood sampling, and nest searching and monitoring, organization and management of field data. Field work requires extensive periods wading in the wetlands under both cold and hot conditions.

Preferred qualifications:
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ Willingness to work early in the mornings in sometimes inclement weather.
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ Accurate data entry.

The program enables students to work on specific projects while getting experience in valuable lab techniques all under the direction of the Center’s professional staff. SERC is focused on understanding the causes and consequences of environmental change for marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. The Consortium for Plant Invasion Genomics (CPING;

(24) in-person undergraduate research positions for Summer 2021.

Each student will be paired with a CPING mentor and will gain experience in
field collection, use of herbarium specimens, genomics, and bioinformatics.
Specific projects will vary by CPING mentor, but students will form an
interactive cohort that will receive training in career development,
research best practices, and scientific communication.

The CREU session will run from June 1st ¡V August 12th, 2021, which
concludes with a professional conference at which students can present
their work. Research sites span 20 mentor labs across 14 U.S. states.
Undergraduates in their second year and beyond (including graduating
seniors) with interests in invasive species, botany, and/or genomics are
encouraged to contact individual CPING mentors prior to application. List

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute is in its third year of our NSF-funded REU Site – Integrated Studies in a Rapidly Warming Fishery Ecosystem. The GMRI REU Site will pair students with researchers based at GMRI and engaged in a broad range of fishery ecosystem and climate adaptation studies.

We welcome applications from undergraduate students from a broad range of institutions and backgrounds including two- and four-year colleges and underserved communities (e.g., minorities, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, veterans).
