Description: The Field Ecology Lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute is seeking candidates for a 6-month internship as a data management assistant within the eMammal team and Snapshot USA outreach and project assistant. eMammal (https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.emammal.si.edu%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cpat.anderson%40uconn.edu%7C1b8c3984c77c405df1ac08d84bfc3b20%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C637342894000731970&sdata=ErxMLwJTOjHKYzPs9heqPppK1C2oxLs5VdrCNLCFLvM%3D&reserved=0) is a cloud-based data pipeline for researchers to manage camera trap data, with an emphasis on projects concerning conservation, ecology, and the use of citizen science to meet research objectives. Primary duties for this position will include processing previously completed camera trap data into eMammal, assist with data management at multiple parts of the pipeline and work closely/assist with volunteers assisting with eMammal. There will also be opportunities to coordinate camera trap projects and help project managers troubleshoot issues with eMammal. In addition, the candidate has the possibility to join field-based projects. Snapshot USA is the first nationwide camera trap survey to collect baseline data of wildlife occurring within and across various anthropogenic and environmental gradients in the USA. We will estimate the distributions and abundance of a variety of native and exotic species and use this information to better understand their roles in the anthropogenic ecosystems, interactions with other taxa, and predict future range expansions and contractions as landcover changed in the 21st century. Required skills and experience:
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ A good knowledge of computers and programming.
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ Experience with programming software (R/MySQL)
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ Experience in using these languages for data manipulation and management is desirable.
Ãf¢ÒÂEURÒ¢ Good communication with team members, project managers and researchers.
Duration, stipend:
The position has a monthly stipend of $1,200 for 6 months. This is fully virtual-online placement. SCBIÃf¢ÒÂEURÃ’Â(tm)s mission is to advance conservation of biological diversity.
