REU Opportunity Summer 2018: “Research Experience for Undergraduates in Chihuahuan Desert Biodiversity”

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Department of Biological Sciences invites applicants for the NSF sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Chihuahuan Desert Biodiversity.  This is a
10 week summer program.  The goal of this program is to provide undergraduate students with experience in hypothesis-driven collaborative research utilizing field based and/or laboratory methods and fully engage students in projects associated with the ecology and evolution influencing Chihuahuan Desert biodiversity.

The program provides:
* High quality research experience in ecology and evolutionary biology in the field and/or lab * Research opportunities at the Indio Mountains Research Station (IMRS), a 40,000 acre facility controlled by UTEP as well as other CD field locations * One-on-one and group mentoring from active research faculty in multidisciplinary fields * Training in bioethics and other relevant professional skills

PhD position in insect-parasitoid interactions and global change

The Prior lab at Binghamton University (SUNY (http://www.priorecologylab.com)  is seeking a Ph.D.
student to work on a project examining how altered species interactions facilitates the success of an invasive gall-forming insect in the Pacific Northwest. We work in an excellent, tractable study system in which we can make comparisons of species interactions (host plants, parasitoid enemies, other
gall-formers) between the invasive gall-formers native and introduced range. We work out in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (PNW), spending time on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and in Washington State.

The lab is seeking a highly-motivated student who is interested in global change ecology, species interactions, plant-insect interactions, experimental ecology, and importantly who is excited about asking ecological questions and conducting research in the field. Students with a BS or MS in Biology (or other relevant discipline), with field experience, research experience, experience with statistics, proven writing and communication skills, and who are self-motivated and independent will be the most competitive. Other desirable qualifications include having additional skills such as experience with genetic techniques, nutrient and chemical analysis, GIS/spatial statistics, or plant and insect taxonomy.

The student will be based at Binghamton University (State University of New York), in Binghamton, NY and will travel to the PNW for fieldwork. The student will be in the Biological Sciences Department, and be a part of the EEB (Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior) group (https://www.binghamton.edu/biology/). BU is located in the Southern Tier of NY and is one of the four major University Centers in the SUNY system.

Research Assistantship for study of plant facilitative effects in longleaf pine forests

The Center for Longleaf Pine Ecosystems at Auburn University and the Jones Center at Ichauway seek a graduate student to undertake a study of plant ecophysiological interactions in longleaf pine forests in southwest Georgia. The study asks how performance of Quercus laevis seedlings and sprouts is regulated by mature Pinus palustris via shading, fuel production, and belowground competition. The study contributes to the southeastern component of a nationwide experiment on Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change. The position is available August 2018. Interested applicants should send letter of interest, resume, transcripts (photocopy is acceptable), and GRE scores (photocopy is acceptable) to Dr. Lisa Samuelson.

Field Assistants Required 2018 Kluane Red Squirrel Project, Yukon, Canada

We are looking for field technicians to assist with fieldwork for three different time periods: (a) 1 March-15-May (b) 1 May-15 August, and (c) 1 September – 15 October.

The positions are part of a long-term study of red squirrel ecology, evolutionary biology and physiology. As a member of the study, technicians will be involved with monitoring the reproduction and survival of individual squirrels. Fieldwork will involve live-trapping and handling of squirrels, radio-telemetry, behavioural observation, and locating young in their nests.
Some positions will also require additional handling for physiological assays (e.g., blood sampling). This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with a collaborative research team on a long-term study of a wild mammal.

All fieldwork is carried against the beautiful backdrop of southwestern Yukon, Canada. We will be staying at a rustic field station two hours from Whitehorse, and ~30 min to the nearest town (Haines Junction). All food and accommodation are provided and technicians are provided with transportation (within reason) to and from the field site either through airfare or vehicles.

Training will be provided and no experience is necessary. Candidates should have an interest in a number of the following (the more the better!):
ecology, evolutionary biology, wildlife, field biology, and animal behaviour. The field camp is remote and low tech (no showers, cell phone service, or internet), so successful applicants must enjoy the outdoors and be able to remain a positive and responsible team member under relatively isolated and demanding conditions. Candidates must be in good physical condition and have an enthusiasm for learning. We work on ‘squirrel time’, which often involves long work days; as such, applicants must have a strong work ethic. The atmosphere at squirrel camp is friendly and inclusive and all nationalities are welcome.

Big Sky Watershed Corps is an AmeriCorps program that assists Montana’s watershed communities to make a measurable difference in local conservation efforts while strengthening the experience of young professionals. Participants focus on watershed research, planning and project implementation, watershed education and outreach, and community engagement. Big Sky Watershed Corps is offered through a partnership of Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Montana and the Montana Watershed Coordination Council.
 
Primary duties of the Corps Member (CM) include working with the Host Site staff to complete tasks related to project design and implementation, community outreach and education, volunteer generation and management and reporting functions. The CM works under the direct supervision of the Host Site Supervisor but also coordinates with the BSWC Program Manager to ensure successful completion of program objectives. The CM must establish and maintain a good working relationship with Host Site staff, community members and volunteers, MCC Program Manager and MCC staff.

DUTIES (specific): Technicians will work on a project to investigate the ecological impacts of fuel reduction treatments in the intermountain sagebrush steppe and western juniper woodlands.  To find out more about the project go to (www.sagestep.org). Technicians will also work on a project quantifying the above ground and below ground carbon levels within the Great Basin.  As well as a project looking at the effectiveness of the weed suppressive bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens, strain D7 (P.f. D7) in controlling cheatgrass.  Technician may also work on several other USGS-BRD projects identifying strategies to control the dominance of cheatgrass and other weeds on Great Basin rangelands, restoring native species, and increasing biodiversity.

Major Duties Include:
.       Identifying plants to species (up to 250 different species)
.       Monitoring native grasses, forbs, and shrub germination and
density
.       Performing various vegetation cover and fuel load sampling
techniques
.       Collection of GPS and photo points
.       Driving on poor and sometime muddy roads
.       Collection of soil cores and plant samples
.       Accurately recording data
.       Processing plant samples and soil cores in the laboratory
.       Data entry

Field work will take place throughout eastern Oregon including Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, eastern Washington, northern California, southwestern Idaho, northern Nevada, and lab/computer work will be conducted in Corvallis, Oregon.  Technicians will be part a five to six person team working in the field together.  Field work will involve exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, and extended stays (up to 9 days) in remote locations (backcountry camping or staying at Fish and Wildlife Service Fire bunkhouses).  Candidates will be chosen based on their combination of experience and education.
Preferred candidates will have experience in plant identification, especially within the Great Basin.  Travel expenses will be covered by the projects using either standard federal per diem or a camp rate per diem.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  The work involves long hours spent standing, bending, walking, and a great amount of physical exertion.  The incumbent may be required to lift containers weighing up to 35 pounds in the performance of the assignment.  Work could possibly be done in 10
-12 hours per day; hours can include all times of day and night, and will vary during the employment term with weather and field conditions.
Core hours will typically be 8am – 5pm. Must have a valid driver’s license. A background investigation will be required for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for a GG-5 you need 9 months of field experience OR 3 years of subprofessional work experience OR 3 years of college with courses related to the work of the position to be filled (equivalent to 90 semester/135 quarter hrs) plus 3 months of lab or field work experience.  Subprofessional experience consists of working as a technician or aid in the field or in a laboratory or similar environment. Must have at least 3 months of experience identifying plants in the field.
EQUIVALENT COMBINATIONS OF SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE ARE QUALIFYING.  Must have at least 3 months of experience identifying plants in the field.

Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is a required due to the physical demands of this job.

During this 8-week (May 17th – July 13th, 2018) undergraduate internship program, qualified students will learn about the Everglades ecosystem, history, water management issues, policies, and educational outreach related to Everglades restoration. Interns will go on site visits to: major restoration sites, water management structures, effected natural areas, and local Everglades education centers. They will grow their professional networks while meeting with scientists, stakeholders, policy makers, and educators who are participating in the most comprehensive restoration project in the world. Interns select from one of four categories for their capstone projects: policy & advocacy, science & engineering, education, and marketing communications & public relations.
 
Interns will receive a small stipend and housing.

M.S. Student Positions

Two M.S. graduate student positions are available for highly motivated students in the Houseman lab at Wichita State University.

1. Soil Heterogeneity and Plant Diversity.  This NSF funded project examines the role of soil heterogeneity and aggregated seed arrival on plant community assembly in tallgrass prairies.  This field experiment tests underlying explanations for species coexistence and diversity and has direct implications for the restoration of plant communities.  The field station for WSU includes several grassland sites as well as a 4700-acre site in the Flint Hills of Kansas, which is the largest remaining, intact tallgrass prairie in North America.

2. Field-based Bioeconomic Model for Invasive Species Control.  This USDA funded project is designed to integrate the demographic details of sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) into an optimization model designed to forecast invader spread under different soil and cattle management scenarios.  Most of the field work will occur on cattle ranches located in
the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas.   When managed well, these sites are
remarkable locations of grassland plant and animal diversity.  The Houseman lab will focus on the quantification of ecological interactions while the Buyuktahtakin Lab (New Jersey Institute of Technology) with take the lead on
the optimization modeling.

Graduate position: IowaStateU.EyeEvolution

PhD position in the evolution of visual systems: the origin of eyes and
how proteins gain and lose functions and interactions

The Serb lab at Iowa State University is looking for motivated
graduate students interested in the evolution of sensory systems
and their influence on biological diversity.  We focus on two
broad topics: (a) evolutionary origin of eyes and the proteins
underlying vision, and (b) the evolution of visually-mediated
behaviors and shell shape in different habitat types among diverse
bivalved mollusk species.  We use a variety of approaches including
comparative genomics, fieldwork, protein expression experiments, and
