*Summary*
We are seeking an Aquatic Ecology Laboratory Technician to join our
research team and work on aquatic ecology and harmful algal blooms (HABs)
in the Great Lakes. The Aquatic Ecology Laboratory Technician will assist
principal investigators and staff in performing laboratory analyses and
field sampling at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s
Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (NOAA GLERL). Tasks assigned to the
candidate will include processing water and plankton samples, quantifying
biological and chemical parameters, sampling aboard research cruises, and
assisting with data analysis.

   – Experience analyzing water quality samples in a laboratory setting

Position Overview:

The crew leader will supervise two crew members for a Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Seeds of Success (SOS) team, operated by Conservation Corps New Mexico. The crew will be based out of the BLM Carlsbad field office. The crew will collect seeds from native species in remote areas on BLM Land and on occasion State, Private, and Public Lands across NM, following SOS protocols.. The crew will collaborate with regional crews to make seed collections. The crew leader will be trained in planning techniques for a successful field season. Subsequently, the crew leader will help train the crew members and will contribute to a regional seed collection training. Crews will be required to drive to different areas throughout New Mexico, camp overnight, potentially hike several miles a day, and return to the office for equipment and data management. This position requires significant driving relative to other types of field work. Crew leaders must be prepared for long days driving and scouting from a truck. Safety is a pre-requisite, particularly where industry development (energy extraction, e.g. Natural gas) is occurring and during hunting season, and will guide how fieldwork is conducted. The crew leader will be responsible for adhering to check-out/check-in procedures and communications via cell phone or SPOT device to ensure crew safety.


Crew Leader Responsibilities:

Supports and manages the field crew’s safety and wellbeing, consistently exercising discretion and judgment. Plans and carries out seed collection efforts, following Seeds of Success (SOS) protocols, throughout New Mexico to support Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conservation strategies. Coordinates field logistics, scheduling, crew tasks, and management of the crew’s equipment. Is the primary contact between the crew, the CCNM supervisor, and BLM staff; effectively coordinates with BLM Staff to complete seed collection of priority species throughout New Mexico. Completes necessary administrative paperwork. Before, during, and after field data collection, the leader is responsible for the organization and quality control of all data collected, including analyzing and interpreting data. The crew leader will be required to write reports to present to various BLM offices and stakeholders. The crew leader should be passionate about sound science principles, be an advocate for the botany program at the BLM, and have a willingness to learn about the importance of native plant materials development in land management within the BLM. The crew leader must consistently exercise discretion and judgement.

This is a full-time, temporary position that requires overnight camping and non-traditional work hours inclusive of weekend and evening hours.

Stream Ecology and Chemistry Field and Laboratory Assistant

SUMMARY: We seek applicants for a temporary (3 months) summer full-time field assistant position in stream ecology and water chemistry The Research Assistant will work on a project to assess the ecological conditions and water quality in an urban stream in New Bedford, MA, in collaboration with watershed conservation and municipal partners. The work will involve field water sample collections, assessments of stream flows, and laboratory water chemistry analysis. The successful applicant will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to gain broad experience through field and laboratory work across stream ecology, environmental chemistry, and urban restoration planning.

Responsibilities:
-Participate in field sampling of water, stream conditions, and stream water flows.
-Process and analyze project data.
-Assist in coordinating schedules across multiple projects.
-Laboratory analysis of water samples, data compilation and interpretation.
-Sampling at irregular hours (early mornings, late nights, and weekends) as needed.
-Travel to multiple field sites in cars.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:
-Must have relevant coursework in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Biology, Chemistry.
-At least one-year field experience in a related field, including basic techniques and instrumentation used in ecology.
-Requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, the ability to work as a member of a team, and the ability to communicate positively with the public.

-Familiarity with best practices for field safety.
-Strong skills in identifying plants or willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications:
-B.A./B.S. or significant work toward a degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Marine Biology or Natural Resources.
-Ability to operate small boats or willingness to take safety course to become certified.
-Demonstrated skills in data organization, analysis, and report writing.
-Data skills including moderate experience with R programming language (or equivalent) for data analysis, graphing, and statistical analysis.
-Use of a car to occasionally travel to field sites.
-Experience with laboratory analysis of water quality using a nutrient autoanalyzer.


Physical requirements:
-This role requires work in the field, including rigorous outdoor activities, walking through uneven terrain, and walking through water and in densely urban environments.
-Working in the field in Massachusetts requires a willingness to endure exposure to insects, ticks, and poison ivy.

Lab manager / lead research technician (deadline extended)

The Miesel Fire and Ecosystem Ecology lab in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University seeks one full-time laboratory manager / lead research technician. Research in our group focuses on understanding (1) how fire and forest management influence soil, vegetation, and ecosystem processes; (2) how pyrogenic carbon and biochar affects soil carbon and nutrients;  and (3) soil spectroscopy for improving soil and plant sample analysis. 

This position will be responsible for assisting with overall laboratory management, maintaining experiments, and coordinating and conducting laboratory analysis of soil and plant samples. Responsibilities will be primarily lab-based with occasional work in the field, greenhouse, and/or other experimental facilities. A major part of the responsibilities will focus on assisting with coordinating project logistics, measurements and data management for a new study investigating soil responses to wildfires. This position will interact with and support graduate students and provide training and oversight for undergraduate student assistants. Additional responsibilities may include contributing to data summaries, project reports, and literature reviews. Opportunity to participate in manuscript development and/or field measurements and monitoring in wildland fire study sites may be available for interested candidates.

Skills and Experience: We seek enthusiastic applicants with a strong background in ecology, biogeochemistry, soil science, environmental science, plant biology, or related discipline. Recent MSc graduates and/or BSc graduates with additional relevant experience are encouraged to apply. Summer Technician – University of Arkansas (Fayetteville)

Research Technician Position

We seek a motivated individual to assist with ecology and conservation biology research projects in Arkansas and Missouri. The first project goal is to determine occurrence estimates for a suite of native crayfish species using kick seine surveys in the Spring River Drainage, AR/MO. The second project goal is to determine relative density estimates of the federally endangered Yellowcheek Darter (Nothonotus moorei), as well as other co-occurring darter species, using snorkel surveys in the Little Red River, AR. The selected individual will gain field experience with freshwater fish and crayfish identification, kick seine technique, snorkel surveying, and abiotic stream monitoring. The individual will also be involved in data organization and analysis.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

One full time technician position is available. Start date is May 1st (flexible) and end date is July 31, 2022 (flexible) with the possibility to extend into October. The technician will be paid an hourly rate of $11.00 for up to 40 hours per week.

DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license. The technician will perform duties including field sampling, maintenance and operation of field equipment, data collection, computer input, and analysis and writing (dependent on ability). Preference will be given to candidates with a BS in ecology, conservation biology, fisheries or a related field. Applicants should have a willingness and ability to perform field work, good note taking skills, and a positive attitude. This position will require individuals to work outside for long hours in a group environment. Candidates must work well in a team setting and be okay with getting dirty/wet and actively being in river environments (i.e., swimming/wading).
